Internet Table-Top Rally Championship 2004-2005
Round 2 - Cloverleaf Rally
Competitor's Comments

Hope all is well with you and new Mrs C. I promised you some TT comments for the web site so here goes:-
Last "season" I heard about the Internet TT Championship and having done a few very local map reading events many years ago decided it would be "interesting" to give it a try. I rapidly realised it was not what I was expecting and in spite of investing an extortionate amount of time in trying to fathom out Crows devious route cards I had to resort to guesswork for most of my "answers". The time taken was probably the main reason for not bothering with the remaining events (like many, I have many other calls on my hours). Early this season Crow advised me of "The Cultivator" and, as it had a "novice class" I decided to have another go. That was far more suited to my single brain cell level, it took far less time, and was an event far more in line with my own needs (ie ability and time availability).
With this years Internet TT announcement came the news that it would have a "less taxing novice class" (call it what you will, that's what it is!) so that at least warranted another try!. How has it been? Well it suits me down to the ground! I reckon it still takes me between one and two hours per "section" and that's about the limit that I can spare in the time each event is "open". I now at last feel I am in with a chance and the fact that I am managing to average between 3 and 4 marks per section (top folk are averaging nearly 5 while some 2's are around as well) probably says its at the right level for me. I still have a target to aim at and if its ever reached there's a whole new level waiting! I held off commenting after 5 Diamonds to see what happened on round two and I am glad to say that from my view point the "novice" level seems to have been held at a consistent level. I AM NOW REALLY ENJOYING THIS GAME!. Please keep the Novice section and please try and keep it to about the current level of difficulty.
A couple of general points
(i) I cannot begin to imagine how much time Ray must put into organising each event let alone answering endless questions from simpletons like me - for that Ray all we competitors are in your debt.
(ii) I have seen others also make this comment, the proceeds are to a most worthy cause and I for one would support one entry fee (at the higher of the two prices) regardless of which section is entered and PLEASE don't waste income on trophies - I'm sure the "winners" would all be just as proud of suitably produced "Crow Certificates"!
Keep Smiling, we are.
Tim Hassall

Just a word of thanks, Ray, for the amount of time and effort that must have once again put in. (Not helped, I suppose, by the rather lengthy email I sent to justify my answers to Routecard 10). This time the routes were, as you promised, generally a little easier to work out, but this was balanced by making the answers to the RC's slightly more difficult. I hope that the benefit of doubt is applied a little liberally in some cases! I hope the new Mrs. Crow is a fan of table-tops, and will allow you to continue with the good work. Good luck to you both for the future.
Alan Crabtree

... I've really enjoyed first two events and looking forward to Breckland and Rally Round. Thanks for all your hard work.
Clive Hodgson

Finally, may I congratulate you on a cracking event. I treated the first round of the championship as a toe-in-the-water exercise, but now that I'm starting to understand a little bit more I find these events both a challenge and fun. I think you've got the balance for the 'road-rally' sections just right: taxing but not impossible, (that is, of course, if I've solved things correctly!). The devil, of course, is in the detail, hence the copious amounts of comments to my answers.
Edwin Hughes

Thanks, Ray, Another one finished just about although I am still struggling with rabbits! Dying to know the solution. Good event although there seem to have been a few gremlins creeping into this one, or perhaps its just me. I found it harder than the FD but thoroughly enjoyed myself and thank you for all your efforts. Congratulations on your recent marriage, I hope that your wife is as understanding as mine! Roll on February. You will be interested to know that Iain Tullie came 2nd on the recent Lombard Revival Rally. Knowing how busy he is I will be surprised if he has attempted any of the Cloverleaf.

I made a serious error on this event, printed out rules and it missed off the last inch of the line of text, so all answers for www, yyy etc. I have stupidly included no thru's as the words DO NOT was missing from my print out. I only noticed when answering my last route card no.1 when the count for WWW got to over 30, I won't rush so much on the next event. Besides my faux pas, the event was quite tricky with the second parts of section 6 and 10 not clicking in to place. Saw lots of number sequences repeated on the Fibonacci series but nothing obvious stood out (even looked on internet for fibonacci numbers up to F1000). I managed to get a route from the first 15 numbers of part2 section 10 then stopped working. Very good challenging event, hopefully i don't get even more brain fade for the next rounds of the series. My aim for the next event is to post a route card before Gavin Rodgers, he seemed quick of the mark.
Glynn Hayward

Seemed a lot more straightforward this time, less head-scratching and therefore less frustration. Thanks for all your hard work.
John Elkin

Doubtful whether I'll get any answers in this month.  Been heavily involved in the Qatar International Baja Rally that was held on Fri/Sat so time's been too short.  I'll see if I can get something in though.
John Griffiths

Congratulations on your marriage. I will look forward to the next Rally.
Mark Aspinwall

You certainly kept me from watching TV! Well done! Enjoyed it, but frustrated that I could get some sections to go and I think I've made some mistakes
Mike Burrows

That's it. I managed to keep my fingers off the return key so all my entries are good entries except for the very first and only incomplete answer sheet. Excellent Table Top. Thanks again for all the work you have done and will be doing. I've enjoyed working out the puzzles and the route but I am not sure about answering the questions. I particularly hate Y>W and Ch! And checking it all to make sure you have it right - nope not for me! Hope you and my fellow competitors have a good Christmas and New Year.
Mitch Fielding

1 form submitted in error ( pressed return ) wally sorry.
Nigel Hewett

I did try the Master Navigators only stuff honestly. Thanks once again for a great event.
Paul Hardy

Cheers (and congratulations on acquiring your new Mrs Crow). Will send more detailed comment (regarding rallies not new Mrs Crow later).
Tim Hassall

I really haven't had enough time to devote to this event - so haven't been able to finish off properly or go back and check anything. Haven't even managed to work out a set of 10 full answers! anyway, I'll send in what I've got. Perhaps it'll be less hectic in the new year (hah!)
Ian Buxton

Many thanks for yet more head scratching variations on themes ... All the best to you and Mrs Crowther for the future. Am off on holliday now for 10 days so won't be able to check how I've done until after the 12th. Thanks again for an enjoyable event.
Mick Lowe

A great event thanks Crow. I hope to do the next one more justice.
