Internet Table-Top Rally Championship 2003
Round 2 - Cloverleaf Rally
Route Card Updates

Q1. Why is the rally called Cloverleaf?
A1. In "Crow's" active days of road rallying (70's and 80's), he was Clerk of the Course of the West Essex Car Club's similarly named event. It was a good old Norfolk trash, run in January, 300 miles long and regularly attracted a full entry of 120 cars and 30 reserves. Those were the days! This TT is a tribute to its memory.

Q2. Have any of the regulations changed for the Cloverleaf?
A2. Yes to Edition 3 - but not significantly. The regulations have been clarified in a few places as a result of competitors' comments, plus the Route Check Legends have been incorporated.

Q3. Will you be publishing scores as you receive them?
A3. Some like this idea, some don't. If you don't, then simply avoid the temptation to view the on-going results table. I won't be updating as frequently as for the Five Diamonds Rally - probably only once a week.

Q4. Should I submit my answers as soon as I have solved a route card?
A4. NO. At least wait until you have completed or attempted neighbouring route cards, just in case you discover a route clash and you want to revise your answers. You are also advised to hold back submitting answers in the first two weeks: Questions and Answers here might clarify certain aspects of the route cards which might give you a hint or two.

Q5. Typo "umarked" in Route Card 1?
A5. Yes, should be "unmarked".

Q6. How come all the route cards have a defined start location given except the first one, and where is it? Route card 7 is the same but at least you can find it from the location of TC6B!
A7. That's a deliberate part of the exercise. The plotting is easy(ish) once you've found the start. Remember, sometimes there are clues in the title.

Q8. In RC7, is the full stop after 'Bournemouth' significant or should it just be a comma like the others?
A8. Not significant - should be a comma.

Q9. On Route card 2,  would I be right in thinking that the first box should contain 7 lines off the central line (and not 6 as shown)? I can get the whole route to work if there is an extra line downwards  (5 in total rather than 4).
A9. No comment!

Q10. (A detailed question about Route Card 8)
A11. Sadly, a farmer has parked his tractor on the small white road at 8652 0100, which for the purposes of Route Card 8 should now be treated as a NTR, Happily, a reconnaissance has confirmed that the white road passing the windmill in 8100 is a through road.

Q11. Route Card 7. Should there be another clue after Hastings or another comma?
A11. Yes, having studied the map under an electron microscope (which you obviously have!), "Hastings, Truro" should really read "Hastings, , Truro"

Q12. How do you answer a question "GN"? Would an example answer be 1245, 1246, 1346.. and list every square even if there are 38 squares visited?
A12. No. Per regulation 12, list any blue grid numbers that you pass through - not the grid squares or grid line numbers.

Q13. Re Q9. I too have found a slight discrepancy with RC2. I'm trying to find a reason for ignoring the White through 6101, but can't find one. So, I'm going to ignore it for no other reason than it will fit! Providing I've done the rest of the card ok I reckon I should only drop 1 mark for the 1st Route Check. I will no doubt have another check before submitting it though. Your answer to the initial query suggests that box 1 is indeed correct and that we obviously have missed something. So I am fully expecting the same answer to this comment!
A13. Yep. As far as I am concerned box 1 is correct.

Q14. Further to my question 9, reference routecard 2 - after many re-visits, I agree, there is no error!  -  obviously too hasty with my original question ! !
A14. :-)

Q15. On route card 2, question 7, do the 'red diamonds' have to be actually on the route, or does it count if the corner of a diamond just touches the outer edge of a road that is on the route?
A15. On and touching (at least the line of the road) both count.

Q16. On route card 3, question 5 (GN), are the grid numbers to be specified as a whole or as separate digits?  For example, if the route passed through just the 5 of 57, should 5 or 57 be quoted in the answer?  Similarly, if the route passed through the 7 before the 5, would the correct answer be 7,5 or 57?  (Of course, the route doesn't go anywhere near 57, which isn't even on the map!)
A16. Separate digits. In your first example, quote 5. In your second example, quote 7, 5.

Q17. (Query about Route Card 1)
A17. Better would be to replace "don't ram the gate" with "ram the gate then continue along footpath"

Q18. I have read the various comments, Questions and Answers regarding Card 2 and I too cannot seem to make it work at the start. I understand that you have reviewed the first box but would like to ask if maybe the first line encountered in the second box is an extra line as without it this would also work. I have worked out the route from the Finish back towards the start.
A18. What more can I say? I am happy that the complete herringbone plots correctly.

Q19. This might be a silly question for someone with my navigation experience but I am trying to understand something, I would also like to know if the white meeting the Motorway in 6107 is considered a NTR. If so, what makes it different to the whites in 6699. (Many Thanks for hours of head scratching and late nights and more to come yet. I am still enjoying it really but herringbones have never been my favorite.)
A19. Rule 16 is the key difference. Gates may be passed through (rule 18), but you can't break the line of the road entering a dual carriageway (rule 16).

Q20. Can you enlighten me with an interpretation of Reg 18 as applied to the whites in 9801, and also if you feel generous on the white on the Herts. boundary in 9903? I don't particularly want to spend the rest of the time I have on trying all 36 possible variants of 'O' in routecard 11 only to find that I have to do it all again if the whites 'go' in their further 3 combinations (hence 108 permutations!)
I need all this time because I can't even find a start for RC1 yet !*!. I have tried all the blue ducks I can find.
Much, much tougher than last one, especially for those of limited imagination, like myself.
A20. I don't regard any of the whites in 9801 or 9903 as through roads.

Q21. How should the word 'schematic' be interpreted in route card 3? Are the tulips supposed to be approximate representations of actual features on the map, or are they simply topographical i.e. A3, G8 and H8 are all equivalent and interchangeable?
A21. The former. They approximate to the actual map as far as "square" tulips allow. Some "Y-shaped" junctions could be represented as T-junctions or Turn junctions depending upon my interpretation of the angle of the junction.

Q22. (clarification of QA20)
A22. Except for the road through Meadhams Fm which is a through road.

Q23. Can I confirm that the white road that passes through the wood at 953086 is being considered as a No Through Road.
A23. Yes, that's correct, otherwise the herringbone doesn't fit.

Q24. Regulation 14. Is a "Road used as a public path" a Road as defined on the map legend, or a Path to be ignored?
A24. Always ignore "Road(s) used as a public path", unless otherwise stated.

Q25. Can you clarify the crossing of things like Grid lines / ETL.
For example the ETL in grid square 8699 - if the junction approached from ENE and left by N - would you cross it twice ?  If you were actually on the road - if your swung wide you would, if you kept a tight line (but kept on your side of the road) you wouldn't.
Likewise the Grid Line 11 of square 7311. If travelling E to W -depends how tight to the kerb you are.
Which way do you go on making the judgement, either:
a.  Travelling on the roads in question, it is possible to cross, so they are counted,  or
b.  Travelling on the roads, it is possible not to cross, so they are not.
A25. ETL - Cross? No.
GL11 - Cross? No.
a or b? Depends. I try to avoid questions with ambiguities, but don't always succeed. However, when marking in such cases I will always be generous and allow alternative answers.

Q26. This may be too specific, but I have some queries so here goes. Are people just holding back with their answers or they in the same boat as me (and others judging by the updates)? RC 2 seems to have caused quite a few queries which I can understand. I think
I've finally found a solution ( like someone else also working backwards) but the 1st junction is in my opinion not covered. This I've chosen to ignore for the simple fact that turning left after RC2A is not an option.
A26. No further comment.

Q27. RC11 is my biggest problem right now. The "O" is mega-difficult so I've started this RC from the finish too. Of course I don't know which direction it "leaves" RC11B but I can't get a match in any direction. Are the "legs" of the E's, the F and the crossbars of the R and A junctions?
A27. No comment.

Q28. Re: Q16. The first (?) is crossed (x) times by the route. Does that count once or (x) times? Later on a (?) and (?) get crossed or touched twice each.
A28. List all the grid number digits in the order that you pass through or touch them.

Q29. Re:A17. Really confusing me this comment 'cos I thought we weren't using footpaths or does this amount to an instruction as in A24?
A29. Generally footpaths aren't used, but this modification is required to make the route card plot correctly.
