GRID SQUARE NEWS The map is overlayed in blue by one-kilometre squares formed by the intersection of Easting (vertical) and Northing (horizontal) grid lines. Grid lines (GL) are identified by the large blue numbers along the map edges which are also repeated across the map at 10km intervals. Grid squares (GS) are identified by joining the preceding Easting/Northing grid line values. Read top/bottom first, then the side (left/right). The side of the grid square (GS) through which the route passes (depart or approach) could be given by compass direction or coded. MTC 1 - Parking & Picnic Area (white ntr) (GS 1760) TC 2 - Parking & Picnic Area (RRYW-ntr) (GS 1554)
SECTION 2 (12 Selectives @ 50 secs) ABBREVIATIONS & GENERAL FEATURES There are four different classified road colours on OS maps - Blue, Red, Orange and Yellow. White roads are also useable but are classified as 'non-colour', so should a section specify 'CRO' whites are not to be used. TC 2 - Parking & Picnic Area (RRYW-ntr) (GS 1554) MTC 3 - B5055/GL16
[FULL MAP ENTRANTS ONLY - LINK TO MTC 4] ROUTECARD 'B' Plotting Area SECTION 3 (10 Selectives @ 60 secs) SPOT HEIGHTS Black figures adjacent to a black dot (or small circle) denotes height in metres above mean sea level. Commonly used only where the dot is actually on a road (although they occur anywhere). Sections employing SHs would expect to avoid those not quoted. Variations on the theme could see them used alternately; with their digits added together or even with the first letter of the number! Triangulation Pillars also show height; these are shown by a blue triangle and are usually off-road also being a lot less common than SHs. MTC 4 - O(ntr)YYO junction (GS 2068) TC 5 - Only junction in GS 2774 Pass through each of the following in order:- 148 106 113 173 308 281 SECTION 4 (12 Selectives @ 50 secs) WITH REFERENCE TO THE NATIONAL GRID Grid squares (GS) are identified by joining the preceding Easting/Northing grid line values. Read top/bottom first, then the side (left/right), eg GS1862 (Map 'A') contains Kenslow Farm. The grid reference (GR), also known as map reference (MR), of the Farm is 1801/2 6221/4, note from the map legend how to accurately plot a reference to the nearest 100 metres. In rallying the 'SK' is normally ignored because it refers to an area of 100 x 100 km grid squares. The directions from which a map reference is approached and/or departed may be given as a prefix and suffix respectively, ie SW1801/2 6221/4ESE = approach from the southwest and depart to the east-southeast. As a navigational trick the 100km grid value, shown as a smaller prefix at the corners of the map, may be added to any MR. Frequently a greater degree of accuracy can be achieved by dividing the tenth of kilometre values into further quarter parts or similar decimal equivalents. A metric rule (2mm = 100 metres) can be used or a Roamer which is a specifically designed piece of plastic incorporating scaled measurements and various other scaled information. Now put this into practice by plotting the following MRs in order:- TC 5 - Only junction in GS 2774 MTC 6 - Only junction in GS 2070 282770 294780 245764 247759 239754 243776 NNW2361/47823/4 2151/27663/4NW NE2193/47633/4SSE NNE2291/27541/4 SE2031/27441/4SE 2041/2716ESE [FULL MAP ENTRANTS ONLY - LINK TO MTC 7] ROUTECARD 'C' Plotting Area SECTION 5 (8 Selectives @ 75 secs) HERRINGBONES Akin to the backbone of a fish, hence the name. It shows the route as a straight line with roads ignored as short 'stubs' to the side(s). Where more than one piece is used they may not be set out in the correct order or the right way round. O--- may show the start and ---> the finish though neither is compulsory. White roads may or may not be shown as broken (or dotted) lines and roundabouts are shown as a series of separate junctions. Another twist could be that the 'stubs' are the roads taken as opposed to those ignored. MTC 7 - A6020/A6(T) junction at Ashford in the Water TC 8 - SH 342 (GS 1176)
SECTION 6 (12 Selectives @ 50 secs) TULIPS Tulips are as per the map drawings of junctions named after the Dutch rally that invented the system. A bulb on the approach road and an arrow on the depart road may sometimes clarify directions but neither is compulsory. Like herringbones, white roads may or may not be shown as broken (or dotted). On route to the furthest point west your route passes through each of the nearest junctions to GL52, GL04, GL03 and GL01 (in that order). Now heading for the furthest point east pass through each of those junctions nearest to GL02, GL50, GL06, GL07 and GL51 (in that order). GL48 is classified as the furthest point south, TC 17 being situated on this GL immediately after passing through the nearest junction. Prior to reaching this junction your route passes through each of those junctions nearest to GL08 and GL49 (in that order). The odd one out is positioned right outside a public house, ironically, so is the next one which is the first twin on an A road. The second time the first one is used, it's sandwiched between identical twins situated in fifth and seventh places. The final twins are separated by a trunk road and five places! Two spot heights later, approach the second from the SE and change grades. TR after another 330 metres before two identical turnings in quick succession take you on a parallel course to that just used. Eight is just about considered to be all one colour and in the middle of a section which also runs parallel with another two grades higher. TR at the next even one. Two bridges span different features and none of the instructions is identical for the next three junctions. The next three odd each offer the same public facility within 75 metres and yet you don't pass any of them. BR has just sandwiched two more and then two more again before using this event's lower case initials. Just as it seems you'll cross a river, head WSW taking the next left and left at T, passing over a buried track and through a word which has nothing to do with roads! One score and ten is a YWY as is the next. LT will take you over the river and RT drops two grades. The three dozen mark hairpins left which will enable the use of a route through a park. Between forty and forty five two level crossings and a bridge are utilised, rounding off with the fiftieth before arriving at TC 27.
