Route Card Commentary

This style of route card is usually well liked, but the variety of "shortest"
routes in part 2 caused much consternation for some, yet the route card winner
scored 10 and completed it in under one hour!
The shortest route for Part 1 was well defined. Only one point affecting RC3
(see below). Those of you who passed through the m of Denmead did not have the
shortest route, I'm afraid.
Part 2 was quite a different matter and a nightmare for me! I learnt a valuable lesson here, should I ever be asked to design a future TTR. Some of you weren't at all shy about telling me how bad this was but thanks to the competitor who constructively pointed out that simply giving the end square required would have solved a lot of the problems.
Hours have been spent drawing and
measuring every different route you came up with. Fortunately for me, I had
asked for letters (invaluable here) and finish GS which allowed me to see which
routes had been chosen. Now, I'm a mathematician and route 6A is the shortest,
so if you had that one, well done! However, since the differences in total route
length for four other routes were only up to 3%, all five routes 6A to 6E and
their corresponding answers have been accepted. The only definite error
determined was those of you who picked up letters coming north through the wood
up to Woodend. You could not take this route and go through both sides of the
pictured loop. See the different PDF map solutions by

RC1 - After provisional results, an eagle-eyed Andy Gibson pointed out he had used the white in pic3. So 4 or 5 was accepted for this answer, as this white wasn't an intentional trick on my part and I didn't want to penalise other competitors (Experts and Novices in particular) for not using the white.
RC3 - Passing through the ea of Denmead, both ea and ae were allowed as you
passed through them simultaneously. After that, there were two choices of route
up to the white which were too close to call on length, so you could have the ss
of Crossways or not.
