Route Card Commentary
The instructions mainly referred to the 4 lists: N = Numbers = A and B road numbers, grid squares, map references and blue grid line numbers; E = English = map features, listed reading right to left to make it a little harder; S = Spot Heights, not in order but the question marks should have helped identify some of them; W = Welsh = the same map features but this time in Welsh (you can easily download a copy of the Welsh language legend from the OS website). So you had to work your way through the list of instructions in order, e.g. ffon (phone); B4385; SH127, etc. The language of the feature was determined by which side of the border it was on, so you had to be extra careful there. On the second line, the instructions were deliberately run together to disguise a SSE approach to a spot height, followed by a SW depart from a map reference. Several competitors went along the white from 3093 to 2993, which satisfied the 'SW' but you would then be left with another 'S' before you reached then next 'N' (A489). Unfortunately the W and N at the very start of the second line were the wrong way round, again if you had worked out how to solve the card this was not a problem.
