Route Card 9 - Competitors' Comments

[The first to answer] After the nightmare of RC8 (90% of my route was correct even though I got the answers wrong!), RC9 has a much better 'feel'. Nice idea - twigged it in front of Norway v Morocco! Hope there is a 'World Cup' RC later! Had to re-draw my route just East of Tatworth to use a longer route to fit in with the later route coming back between 156 and 87 - nice idea for a 'real' event. [This is a real event!] Keep up the excellent work & interest!  Mark Goodman

Hope I've been a little more accurate with my plotting this time...Q4, joining A roads includes the last red onto sh 205 (shorter than to sh231). Q9, bridges, includes one at 366050 over the railway without the side marks of a bridge. My poor map is getting rather sorry at the bottom - we must go up soon! [RC11 onwardsClive George

Ha - at last one I can do!!  Good idea too - well done. Ans 4 - I have included the end but not the roundabout in 3208.  If the roundabout counts as joining a red once then this answer should be 5 or if it counts as twice then this answer should be 6. Ans 9 - I've included the railway crossing in 3605 in this although it's hard to see if there are bridge markings on my map. [10/10Mark Fearon

First time for what seems like ages that I've got some answers!  It's nice to have a route to plot rather than just some ideas that don't lead to anything but frustration!!!  Wouldn't want things too easy, though!   Peter George

Nice easy section, that means I've got it all wrong. Have not counted crossing A358 in 3208 this staggered junction would to me be the A358 joining the A30. Have included joining A30 at finish. Have not counted staggered B road intersection same as above. Possible bridge in 3500 not counted. Only 1 bridge in 3305?  Pete James

Don't like the new Wednesday issue; only leaves me one weekend - which hasn't been anywhere near enough for the last couple of route cards! (I do have a life as well!). By the way, you got my last email on Thurday because I was having a well-earned long weekend... I'm busy for the next couple of weekends as well, so I'll have a major problem trying to fit things in...No chance of a return to Friday/Saturday issue? Nice to have a reasonable route card again...! A couple of comments: SH188 in 3006 is south of YYW junction, SH216 in 3008/9 is off-route [I judged this, along with most others, as being sufficiently on the A road to avoid it], Bridge symbol in 3605 is only just there but I counted it anyway.   Catherine Woodman

RC 4 includes TC10 In. RC 7 unable to pick shortest route through 3607 and 3608 - opted for WR - using YOR would give an extra B road join. [10/10]

Just a couple of points. SH216 at 306.5090; I have taken this as being on the R/Y junction and therefore can pass it on the Red without going through it. If you have defined this otherwise [Yes], then my route would have to loop north a bit and so the answers to RC2 would be 3109 and RC4 would be 8 [OK]. The second point is the railway crossing at 366057 as the bridge symbol is partly blocked by the buildings but has still been counted as a bridge crossed, otherwise my answer to RC9 would be 7. Good routecard, enjoyed plotting it and not spending lots of time trying to figure out what it all means. Keep these type coming please.  [10/10]  Mike Biss

Struggled a bit on this one after the first line....

Different, various clues within the route card helped. As usual just a few queries:- Presume SH188 is the circle @ 3035 067. Presume SH 216 in 3009 is on the Red Road thus forceing you North into 3109 (Most Northly Square) to get to SH147. Otherwise most Northly square would be 3509 if SH147 is @ 3575 0905 (very faint spot at the Junction). Only other query is the bridge @ 366 057. I think bits of bridge symbol are shown.

Re 9  I assumed east Y over rail in 3605 is a bridge.  Colin Hensman

RC9 includes railway brdige in GS 3605 where bridge symbol is unclear due to buildings.  Gillian Goodlass

Arg! Finally spotted it at 11pm last night! I suppose it should have been obvious... Yet another 'easy one'.....! A few ambiguities as usual (in no order!): 4) Includes joining the A30 at TC10 (in) [Yes]. 9) I assume you spotted the very unobvious bridge in 3305? [Yes] Also, I assume the road over the railway in 3605 is counted as a bridge (not very clear).[Yes] 10) I recon the measurement is almost exactly 6.55cm, so it could go either way....[Yes] 8) One could argue that the yellow crosses 06 in 3605 (near spot height 72), and even that you cross 06 again when turning onto the orange in 0534. If either of these are counted 06 is joint 1st, if both 06 wins (assuming you count  touching as crossing twice). 2) I think you could argue that either 3010 or 3110 [?] are the most northerly point, depending on which bit of the road you look at (but see below also). Also: I've taken the loop above the A30 from sh 193 as I think sh 216 is on the A30. Just in case you feel that 216 is off the A road, this would mean you don't have to do the loop, changing answers 2) to 3009, 4) to 7 and 5) to 4  Jeremy Rodgers

The route between 'This map' and 135SE, I've assumed that SH 216 is 'on' the A-road at 306090, so you have to
avoid it by going round the loop via trig point 219. Answer 4, (A-roads) I've included where you re-join the A-road at TC10(in) at SH205. Answer 7, B-roads, I've assumed that the junction at 319086ish doesn't count as crossing a B-road (you pass it on the A-road). The distance, I make it 6.56cm which rounds up to 6.6, but it looks a pretty close call! Took me a long time to suss out, even with the obvious clue! brain not in gear really.

Hopefully I'm back on the pace [almost, 9/10] although it's now 11pm on Tuesday and OTL is looming large. RC 4 includes TC10(in).RC 9. If 366057 is a bridge then 6 crossed. RC 10. Distance is very close to 6.55cm, but with my ruler fractionally nearer 6.6cm.  Keith Norman
