Clues (not in order) as to their general meaning are Eastings/Northings; Footpaths/Bridleways; Gradients; Bridges; More Gradients; Red/Yellow/White; Even More Gradients; No Through Roads; Conventional; Spot Heights. Most bridges, railway crossings and ETLs are consistently shown.

The Route Checks 1) to 10) are in the same order as the herringbones. They are situated at the non-standard "gaps" in the "bones". All are spot heights except one which is a "blue number".
