Internet Table-Top Rally Championship 1998
Route Card 10 - Competitors' Comments

[First to answer] That was a really good one, I enjoyed that. Took a little while to suss the meaning of the Footpaths/Bridleways herringbone. Only one clarification this week, RC6; I have ignored spot height 6 (which is shown as being on the bridge) because the gap in the herringbone is between bridge symbols, i.e. go via SH24 [Ah shucks, you spotted it!]. As to my thoughts on the event so far? I think some of the sections have been a bit difficult to do in a short space of time. If they had appeared in one of the regular events you would have time to think about it, go and do another section, come back to it and think about it some more. Also, with this event there may be a week allowed, but invariably there is not that amount of time available to me. [10/10]   Mike Biss

Brilliant! Really enjoyed that one. Much nicer to have several tricky bits to work out and know the rules, rather than one extremely obscure bit with millions of possible interpretations. You might be interested to know what order I solved them in: 1 (fairly easy), 2 (hard), 6 (sneaky + ambiguous, see below), 7 (easy), 8 (fairly easy), 4 (easy), 3 (Good one! Easy once you've worked out the rules), 9 (a pig - would be impossible if you hadn't worked out that it had to be footpaths by elimination), 5 (easy in this order - i.e. you know what it has to be), 10 (ambiguous route [I don't think so - see below], but otherwise OK). AND I get a weeks rest now!
The ambiguous bits: 6) Argh! I really can't decide whether you're trying to be sneaky here [yes] , or whether your drawing package [Paint Shop Pro] limits the accuracy of your 'gaps'. I've gone for the former in the end. If the latter, the answer should be 6. The problem is that the clue quite clearly shows that there should be a number (spot height) BETWEEN bridge 3 and 4. Spot height 6 in right in the middle of bridge 3, so I would argue that this doesn't fit your nav (i.e. you would have put the gap in the middle if the 3rd bridge, not after it). In order to get a number between the two bridges, you have to do a slightly longer loop up to spot height 24. Hope I haven't done myself out of a point by trying to be too clever.....9) 7 is part of 47, just in case....10) There are two possible routes which I measured as being almost exactly the same length. However, the other route would give you 2 spot height in the 'gap' [so it's not ambiguous!], the 1st of which is the same as the other route anyway (99 and 81).

[later] Sorry if you're despondent about the drop off in entries. I'm enjoying the event, so I hope you decide to persevere. Thanks for all your hard work. I think you're probably right in questioning the 12 out of 20. With the 1st few being easier, it looked like the top 5 or so were all going to have 120s, therefore it would all be down to furthest cleanest, so anyone dropping points on the 1st few cards was out of the running. I guess this would have put a lot of people off. I think you were right to allow some missed entries, to allow for holidays, but most people only take a couple of weeks over the summer, and keen people can probably get on to the internet while on holiday anyway (I'm already thinking about how to dial in from the Vercour in a few weeks time - a mobile and laptop, or the simpler technology of phoning a mate back in England....?). I would have thought 17 or 18 out of 20 would be more appropriate and as you say, would allow slightly simpler nav for most of the cards - it's MUCH more fun when you work these things out, and VERY demoralising when you fail to get it entirely. Hindsight is great.....
PS RC16, World Cup? Is there some sort of tournament going on? Oh well, I dare say I can find the relevant information somewhere on the web, or I 'might' know someone who has a tiny bit of interest in football......
Then that's when I'm in France, so maybe it won't matter anyway [a footballphobe].

Hmm, bit of a tricky one - I'm still not sure about some of the route. Had to do most of it backwards! (having spotted the odd section that fitted) A bit too much like doing 10 tabletops in one go - here are some comments. (especially for questions 6 and 9).
1st section (gradients) - I took there to be 2 bridges in 4308, with SH124 between. but you may have intended the route to go over the bridge at grewkerne station - either way, the answer is the same.
2nd section - no through roads - OK.
3rd section - spot heights. Took a long time to suss how this worked although I could see the general idea. I assume the first dot (without a line) is the first SH (51) then the lines go up or down depending on whether the SH is higher or lower than this - hence the double line after the ETL where you get SH51 again. spot height before the ETL =58 is the answer.
4th section - gradients. I got this section by guesswork before I got the surrounding sections to work as confirmation. SH37 is before the bridge over the A35.
5th section - only managed to get this to fit when I plotted it backwards! (from the subsequent section) Eastings/Northings, the SH19 is in GS 4493.
6th section - bridges. I took it that the long bridge in 4691 was still just a single bridge. I had to go via the 2 bridges at 472930 and 474932, and I could not see a bridge symbol at the B-road in 4792 so you could go to the roundabout and up the A3066, over bridge, right onto white and over bridge (coming back down either via the roundabout if allowed or via the white loop) This meant that the only SH on route was SH6 which is *on* the 3rd bridge, not after it. However, if there IS a bridge symbol on the B-road you'd have to go via the white to the A-road, via SH24 in 4794 - I measured the route via the alternative white roads as about 1mm longer - and back down via the white bridge and the A-road bridge to the roundabout. If this is the case, I'd give 24 as the answer *between* bridges since SH6 is *on* the bridge.
7th section - conventional (with an ETL tacked on the end) seemed OK (once I guessed what sort of route it was), SH12 in 4693.
8th section - Red/Yellow/White - another section I guessed by finding the right bit of road. without the surrounding sections. SH88 in 4898
9th section - bridleways/footpaths. seems that roads that weren't also paths/bridleways were only counted if you travelled along them? the 'blue number' that actually cut the road was the digit 7 which I've given as the answer, but it was the 7 of '47' which may have been the answer you expected. (If it was, then my answer is '47' !)
10th section - again, guessed 90% of this one in isolation. Still not sure what the big circle was - the 'o' in Broadwindsor? (or shortmoor?) [the Tunnel!] I took it that the lines were ETL's, and the SH between them was the 99 in 4506. I made the finish at the RH bridge in 4808 but I guess I'll see if this is correct on Wednesday! [10/10

Well you did say enter guesses if you could not do things. [later] Is it to late to change the above answer [yes], I just realised what the spot height section was about. Well it was better than watching England play. [you mean England actually inspired you for the answer!!] I fully understand if my amendment is not allowed. Owen to start the next game??

What a lot of good ideas in one section - my favourite section to date! I think I might use some of these ideas on my next 'real' event (sorry, next event involving a car!) - 12 car in November - want an entry? [find me a driver and I might be interested] Specific comments: assume 3rd herringbone was 'bones up' for SH>51 and down for SH<51 & RC3 is the SH at that bone [correct] - not sure why the first dot didn't have bones up and down like the later one. RC6 - assume SH24 in 4794 [yes] but you might have been after SH6 right on the bridge? [no] RC10 - I get shortest route over 6 ETLs as YYY in 4507 to RRRR in 4607 then SH99, SH81 before RRW in 4607 BUT this means RC10 would be SH99 and SH81. Alternative route to pick up 1 SH is YYY the WRR in 4505 then RRRR and RRW - but I guess the correct route is the third option I haven't even spotted! Keep up the good work - how about in the results table publishing something like %correct solutions from those entered - this may give different results for the 'best n of m'? [watch this space] [10/10Mark Goodman

I'll just blame this on my jet lag! Just couldn't connect up very well at all.  Don Clarke

An interesting route card. In general I think that some of the RCs are too difficult. RC8 & 9 would have been better if you had given a clue, otherwise it is only possible to do them if you have seen their type of RC before. But they are all interesting, keep up your good work.  Ted Manktelow

RC6 - Although the obvious answer would be '6', I feel this is incorrect. As although the route would be shorter, the SH6 is on a bridge and not between bridges as the herringbone indicates. RC9 - This is just the '7' of '47' as the route only touches the '7'.  [10/10Stuart Martingale

On the second herringbone I also go through the "blue number" 1 of grid line 01, but as you state that there is only one "blue number" route check I think I am correct in giving SH 219 as the answer.  Bridget Lewis

Having read the latest news I hope you don't give up. Enjoyed this one. Sorry it took so long to return my answers but the SH bone took ages to work out. In fact didn't spot it until 13:15 (23/06). Plus could not decide which was the shortest route to use 6 ETL's on last bone.Went via (453 075SW , 4585 0575N , (99) 461 0795ESE. Other route could have been (453 075 NE , 461 0795S , 458 068ENE , (81)   47075 068NNW 4725 076)   Ewan Hopes

Another tough one.  I couldn't work out numbers 3, 5 or 9 so there are quite a few guesses here.  Hopefully I'll get some of them right. Please keep up the good work - I am definitly enjoying this - even if some of it is very frustrating. Mark Fearon

I struggled with this one however a late spurt tonight (tuesday) saw a few more sections completed  -  correctly I hope!  John Evans

Took a while to see how to start this. Ref RC6. Chose SH24 not SH6 as that was on a bridge symbol and not (as drawn) between them.
