The herringbones are in order and go from left to right. Clues (not in order) as to their general meaning are Eastings/Northings; Footpaths/Bridleways; Gradients; Bridges; More Gradients; Red/Yellow/White; Even More Gradients; No Through Roads; Conventional; Spot Heights. Most bridges, railway crossings and ETLs are consistently shown.

The Route Checks 1) to 10) are in the same order as the herringbones. They are situated at the non-standard "gaps" in the "bones". All are spot heights except one which is a "blue number".

1) Uphill and Downhill gradients, with a LC and two bridges in the middle, and three ETLs at the end. (finished in GS 4104)

2) Ignoring No Through Roads. (started in GS 4204, finished in GS 4098)

3) Start at SH51 (GS4298). Ups and Downs with spots were spot heights higher or lower than SH51. The spotted up and down was another SH51. There were 3 ETL crossings. Finish at a down gradient (GS 3994).

4) Up and down gradients with one bridge. (start in GS 3994, finish in GS 4093)

5) Ignore left was a Northing. Ignore right was an Easting. (start in GS 4193, finish in GS 4592)

6) Just bridges, but they were difficult to see. The most common mistake was giving an answer of SH6 - which was on the bridge. You had to take a large detour via SH24 (GS 4794) to visit the necessary bridges and a SH between the bridges. (start and finish in GS 4592)

7) Conventional herringbone with an ETL at the end. (start in GS 4592, finish in GS 4895)

8) On the bone, single width was a White road, double width was a Yellow road, quadruple width was a Red road, otherwise a normal herringbone. (start in GS 4996, finish in GS 4598)

9) Using and ignoring footpaths/bridleways (start in GS 4699, finish in GS 4601). I had to accept a 'blue number' of 7 or 47. I should have really have said 'blue digit'.

10) Start at the tunnel (GS 4603). Up and down gradients with ETL crossings, finishing at a bridge.

The Route Check answers were;
1) 124  2) 219  3) 58  4) 37  5) 19  6) 24  7) 12  8) 88   9) 7  10) 99
