Route Card 16 - Competitors' Comments

Route check 3 - I've counted gradients where I go through the point of the gradient arrow; hence I've excluded two gradients in 3012 where I just go through the tip of the 'feather', the gradient being on an adjacent road.
Route check 4 - I counted one ordinary phone and one motoring association phone, giving a total of 2 phones. Normally I wouldn't have counted the blue phone as 'public' but I remember you using one earlier in the event!
Route check 7 - this is affected by one of my 'iffy' plots (310134 which plots in the middle of a field) - I've taken the route as using 310143 via the A-road and going back via SH65. If I hadn't had to take this guess I'd have put 69 - the SH right near the start layby.
Route check 10 - I've taken that 239 in 2016 is just off route (to the left of the X-roads where I turn right) so I make the 3rd-from-last spot height to be 257 (last 3 257, 197, 262). However, if you've taken that 239 *is* on route, the answer is 197 (last 3 = 197, 239, 262)
I've also assumed the alphabetical order to be based on the names you gave e.g. U for USA rather than A for America; H for Holland rather than N for Netherlands, S for South Korea rather than K etc... And my interpretation of the clues was: Group rounds = 6-fig grid refs; round 2 = grid lines; quarter finals = 8-fig grid ref (?); semi-final = grid square (?); 3rd-place/final = blue grid numbers.
I'm not as confident about the answers this week although I'm fairly sure I got the ideas OK. Found it very hard to get a route to fit the clues. A couple of my grid refs (from the group rounds) seemed wildly off, e.g. 220245 in the middle of Taunton? [s/b 221145, but lucky for you that this MR did not affect any of the RC answers] It just seems so unlikely, I've had to assume I made a mistake although I couldn't find it. Couple of other plots seemed strange too but I won't tell you which in case it harms my defence...! Can't devote any more time to this week's route as I'm off for a week's holiday - so I'll only have 2 days to look at the next route card as well! [First to answer and the only 10/10]

Sorry I could not complete the last few Route cards. Time is at a premium and without a good clue I could not solve them in the time available.  John Evans

No 3 could be 11 if you count going over the tail of an arrow which is off route. No 4 would be 2 if you counted AA phones. I'm submitting this for Jeremy as he's on hols (but with access to phone + fax!) hence the odd email address.  Jeremy Rodgers/Clive George

In the first part, USA-Iran score was wrong way round, but pretty obvious when checking the tables as USA won 0. For RC8, the route crosses an A road by going under it at MR 322.5142.5, so have counted that in my total of 6. [Except that the shortest route around Combe St Nicolas doesn't go under the A road!] For RC10, I consider 239 is at the side of the route, therefore not counted. This one was hard work, but enjoyable and Trickey Warren lived up to its name. Pleased that I'm not doing it in Texas, Mike had a record temperature of 106 degrees on Saturday. [Congratulations, you have reached your objective of a score of 100Don Clarke

I assume there was an error and the correct score should have been Iran 4 USA 3. For RC10 I assumed 3rd from last = 4 before the end otherwise answer would be 197.  Colin Hensman

Phew, what a rush! Just back from two weeks away and no time - effectively rules out 3 sections - I had done all the hard work on the Rally Round section but ran out of time to plot it before I caught the ferry! I have not had time to plot the missed sections which may have screwed the route for this section. Haven't had time to look at your new suggestions - will do so and feed back comments ASAP. This section was good, but would have been better if I had had more time to think/check! 1st round matches I have equated to 6 figure refs, but couldn't get a couple to plot so 'forced' then into another likely square as I didn't have time to recheck all the scores etc. 2nd round I used GLs, 1/4 final used one 8 figure ref, semis a grid square and the others crossing blue GL numbers. In RC4, I didn't count the telephone in 3110 but did the blue one in 2813. Hopefully I will have time to do the remaining sections (and read the large amount of info you are publishing for us!).  Mark Goodman

Question 3. I have included the two arrows in 3012 where I crossed part of the arrow but not the point. Had to the change one result:- Noticed Group F had USA as not winning a single match but in the list of results they beat Iran. Once I had changed this result to Iran 4 USA 3 the gird references appeared to work. P.S.  Who is Ewan Thomas. Thought he ran the 400m not the Pathfinder. Although I think Ewan is spelt differently.  [Oops! Ewan is referring to my error in last week's Table-Top Times where I erroneously referred to him as Ewan Thomas! Guess I've been watching too much athletics on Channel 4] Ewan Hopes

All answers are guesses I'm afraid. Managed to work out the scores for each game, and someone who watches football supplied me with a schedule, but couldn't work out what I was supposed to do with them. Thought I might as well have a guess. I was thinking the scores might be map refs., but apparently not. Choice of football deeply unpopular with me. Having just tried my hardest to avoid the most stunningly boring few months when all the media could talk about was the world cup football, having to actually understand the organisation was complete anathema. This very nearly led to me boycotting the RC. Please keep off this subject in the future, it really is done to death by the TV etc. [But then again, at least it shows us TTers try to keep up with some of the things that are going on outside our closeted world! Roll on 2002] Matthew Atkinson

Some errors in this RC. Well at least 2. [Um, some errors in your answers, at least 2Pete James

No 4. excludes motoring organisation phone in GS 2813 and also public phone in GS 3110 which doesn't appear to quite touch the route.  Gillian Goodlass

NB RC8 - I`ve not counted going under the A303(T) in GS3214, as the route does not actually touch the A road, but goes under a bridge.   RC10  -  I presume SH239 in GS2016 is actually on the route - it`s right in the junction as far as I can see. Anyway I`ve counted it as second from the end! Incidentally while it may be true that nobody would expect USA to beat Iran I wouldn`t have put much money on Cameroon beating Italy 5-1 either, but after all this was the Fantasy World Cup, wasn`t it!!!!  Alan Crabtree

I've ignored all the grid refs that I think are errors. (Like Jeremy, phoned from Switzerland. I can imagine them sitting at opposite ends of the room not talking to each other for whole days, esp as Mark's world cup schedule was critically wrong!) [Er, what?Mark Fearon

MR 310143 appears to form a trap with RC7. The MR is to the East of the junction at SH84, therefore the route is via SH65 which is the lowest on route. [Yes, missed by many] Good Route Card - took some working out, as i did not have a complete list giving the date and time of all the matches. I don't think the white in GS 2016 through 2015, 2115 to 2116 is a goer near SH239, but the route card won't work unless I use it.  Ted Manktelow

Since our house is non-football the hardest bit was getting a copy of the match schedule! It wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been though tricky in 1/4 and semis!?  Carol Moulton

Comments re 1999 Proposals

Yes, sounds good. Still haven't quite decided which format would be best but I think plot and bash would be a goer. Cost : 5sq no probs. Prizes - don't care! Why summer? Is that a dead time for rallying? This type of thing ought to be ideal for winter surely - less to do around garden, etc. [It's set for Summer so that it doesn't clash with the National TT series - but since that seems to be having problems in getting going this year, there's still time to reconsider.Clive George
