Route Card 19 - Competitors' Comments

Not too bad when you see the trick (once you can actually see the pictures..!) but tricky to get the shortest route through Taunton! had to draw my pencil lines very thin. My route from GS2224 goes via E22252425NW on red, 22152435WSW white loop, SW22052425NW back to red, ESE21752455SSW onto white, W21752425S etc. [this was the required route] This is because I don't think you really cross the line properly at the white crossroads at 220243 - but if you think differently the route could be E22252425SW onto yellow, N22152405W onto white, ESE2195241NE, cross into 2224 and back at SSW2200+2435WSW then ENE21752425S which is about 400m shorter; or even SSW2200+2435NW then ESE21702445SSW then W21752425S which is about 25m shorter than my route. If you've taken that either of these cross the grid line (I still don't think they do) then my answers to questions RC1-RC6 would have been RC1=13,   RC2=4, RC3=14, RC4=3, RC5=2, RC6=5.
I take it that there is not a white between the red/yellow roundabouts at 23552505, [correct] I think it's just the edge of some buildings (bit like your white at 252248 which I'm sure is just the edge of buildings with a path alongside...) so I went to the red roundabout then onto the yellow. (if you think this white does go, it would push RC1 up by 1, RC5 up by 1 and RC6 down by 1) Most westerly point is at the end, the El Sub Sta.
I also think there's an error in the route cards; 2nd to bottom line of middle picture should be 2122 not 2124 - otherwise you jump grid squares.[Ooops]

Nice one! I enjoyed that. I'm sure I'll be knocked off 1st place, but never mind, it was fun being on top. I think you made one slight mistake. The 'green' line in the last but 1 row of the second graphic should have been 22 not 24 (ie 2 places further left), but it was pretty obvious.

Unfortunately I have had no time this week to devote to the section. I had a couple of hours last week and apart from noticing that only one line colour changed by one at a time thought it would be grid squares/lines. But this would mean entering the original square several times which I couldn't do. I also tried one colour line as being a road colour and the other line being under or over the many ETLs, bridges etc but couldn't get that to work. Since then I have had no time to go back to it. I am on holiday next week so unless I can solve and do card 20 by Friday evening I'm afraid you will not get an answer from me. Thanks for all your sterling work and I WILL reply to your suggestions for forthcoming events.  Mark Goodman

Assumed an erroneous instruction after GS2222   Keith Norman

There is a short cut white in GS2325 but I have not used it as rule 7 says exits for dual-carriageways are not allowed where the line of the road is unbroken.  Ted Mantelow

Well, I confess to being beaten (again!!!).I think there are 58 codes in sets of eight 1/4" squares, but I`m blowed if I can decode it.   Given the hint in your "NB" I`ve made a wild guess at the answer to RC10, because its not posible to go any further East. TC19(in) is fairly obviously at the Electricity Sub Station in GS1924 (anagram)....{how about a bonus point for that?!} [well, er, I'll just give you one]  Incidentally, I`ve just noticed that you`ve only given me 8 points for Route Card 14, but my copy of the Answer Sheet shows all answers correct hence I should have got 10. As all points gained are hard won indeed, could you explain why you`ve docked me 2 points? I was disappointed with route card 18, because I plotted the route perfectly but only got 6 answers correct because of differences in opinion on whether certain objects count or not. This is an inherent problem when you have a very long route and large numbers of things to count.  Alan Crabtree
