Internet Table-Top Rally Championship 1998
Route Card 20 - Competitors' Comments

A last chance to redeem myself!! For RC2 I have included the telephone in square 12/25 - SW12625425SSE although it is debatable whether it is actually on route.  Assuming of course that I have the correct route in the first place.  Also for RC 6 I have excluded the LC at the start as I figure that the route does not CROSS the railway. Anyway enough of that  WELL DONE  to you Ray for your efforts and energies on the 20 route cards. Some were rather too difficult or time consuming but I appreciate the work you put in.  Thank you and hope to compete on the next one.  John Evans

Although time and other things have not been on my side and my brain has been asleep for most of the event - at least I didn't finish last!! Thanks for all of your hard work looking forward to the next one!  Steve Waggett

Apologies for fading out of this, work pressures took over. Well done for all the work, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Certainly my fellow commuters on the 07:38 have decided I am Completely Barking, I noticed a great rush not to sit next to me in the morning as I got out my pink map, pencil, rubber, romer, clue sheet, scribble paper.....I have learned a lot about tabletop rallying and am very pleased that I took part. Thanks again.  Catherine Doherty

And it's all over! Another enjoyable route card, although I'm not very confident about the answers! Thanks for all your time and effort, it's been a fun competition. I look forward to next year! A few bits I'm not sure about: 2) I've not included those in 1020 [wrong], 1423 [right] and 1225 [right] 3) I've counted 3 crossings in 1429 [right] 4) I have a feeling I've missed something, there are several very close contenders on my route......6) I've not included the start 10) The 'L' in 1126 is dubious....I assume you did use the very unobvious bridge under the railway in 1019? [yes] Jeremy Rodgers

Many thanks for organising a very enjoyable comp. Not many people would give up so much spare time. Congratulations to both Jeremy Rodgers & David Bell. Look forward to the 8th to find out who the winner is. Looking forward to next years comp.  Ewan Hopes

Phone at 1423 assumed to be on route. If not answer 2 is one less. Phone at 1225 assumed to be off route. If not answer 2 is one more. Question 3s literal answer is 3, but on past experience you usually mean the number of times an ETL is crossed, in which case it's 12. Assumed that ETL at 146294 is crossed twice. If not, then it's 10 not 12. (unless it's 3 of course). Liked the idea of the simplicity of this, but disliked the idea that if one mistake is made, it could potentially affect all the answers. God knows if I've got the longest route though, I'm quite prepared to see that someone's found a longer one. I'm also not hemmed in by any previous route, so I hope that I've not used previous route to make it longest. Didn't have time to plot all the ones I couldn't do just to find which bits I shouldn't visit. A nice finale to a fun event, and just in time for me to go on Holiday. I've really enjoyed the championship, and I've been seriously impressed by all those who regularly get perfect scores. Either they're geniuses or they have nothing else to do all week. I've also got some good new ideas for 12 Car navigation over the coming season, which should intrigue my regular experts! I'm sure others will say it, but thanks for all the effort Crow, and I'll try to pass the word around the club more next year, and get you some more competitors. Matthew Atkinson

Q2 - I've included the phone in 1326, although the pointer line just fails to touch the road. The other phones are in 1529, 1228, 1121, 1122. I've excluded phone in 1020, it points to the wrong side of the road and is just after the junction. I've also excluded phone in 1117 as it seems to point to the edge of the motorway rather than the edge of the yellow; however this is arguable and if you've taken this phone to be on route my answer would be 6. I've excluded the phones in 1423 and 1225 as they are on the wrong roads. Q3 - I make it that there is a double-crossing of ETL at 'The Priory' in 1429, (total 3 crossings in the square) giving my total of 12 ETL crossings (NB - if you wanted the number of individual ETL's crossed, it would be 3, as there are 3 separate ETL lines !) Q4 - I make 43 in 1722 just nearer the route than the 59 in 1426. Q6 - I assume you mean cross either over or under a railway; there is one 'under' and 4 'overs'. I've excluded the LC at the start as you don't really 'cross' the railway since you're already on it.
General: I've assumed that the railway-over-yellow bridge in 1019 is a 'goer' on the yellow coming SE from the T/slot. I've also assumed you're not allowed to go the wrong way round the roundabout on the A38 in 1219 (otherwise I'd have a slightly longer route and the nearest SH would be 88), and also that 'one stretch of A38' means you can't use a crossroads across the A38 as well as going along it.
Bit of a tricky one; not sure if I've got the longest route as there may be an alternative that I didn't spot. still, I seem to have used up most sections of road. Route checks seemed quite tricky too.
Thanks for all your organising, hope you had a good hols!  Ian Buxton

Excellent rally thank you. This is probably all wrong as I did it on top of the Derbyshire moors. Never mind it was good fun - see you next time.  Brian Banks

Thank you for a good event.  Bridget Lewis

Phew!! Finally got to the end! And finishing with another mammoth counting exercise! Just a few notes on the answers..... RC2: I've judged the phones in GS`s 1020, 1423 and 1225 to be just off route (well at least as far off as the ones in a previous Route Card that I thought were on and you didn't)..... RC3: I've taken the question to mean the number of times crossing ETL's. Actually I have crossed one ETL 5 times, another 3 times and a third 4 times, so taking the Question literally you could arguably have an answer of 3..... RC6: The LC at TC20(out) has not been counted, as the route does not actually cross the railway..... RC7: I did not consider that crossing the A38 was using a second stretch of it.  Thanks for a good TT.. no time for any more .. it's 2356 on Tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Alan Crabtree

That's it - Thanks for the entertainment and all of the hard work involved in putting it together. Although I think at times either it was my brain asleep or your mind is more devious than mine!!  Steve Waggett

Hope you had a pleasant break. Just a quick note thanking you for the entertainment over the summer? weeks. Even if it does not appear so at all times your efforts are very much appreciated. Congratulations to Jeremy and bye bye for now. [No answers received for RC20!!!!!]  Dave Bell

RC2 - I include the telephone in 1020 as it is on the junction. I have not included the one in 1117 as it is not on the road, and I have not included the ones in 1423 and 1225 as they are not on the junctions. RC3 - my route crosses only 3 ETLs, but crosses each a number of times. If you want the number of times an ETL is crossed then my answer is 11. That's the end! Thanks again for all the hard work.  Ted Manktelow

By the time you read this your holiday will be over. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed it - you certainly deserved it after the trauma of the last 20 weeks. This last route card required a brain-washing, after years of 'shortest route', the idea of longest route takes a bit of getting used to. Thanks once again for keeping my brain active. I have stored away various little pearls of wisdom that I am sure will be used in the future. Till next year then (maybe the 'Pathfinder' if you get dragged into that)  Don Clarke

Sorry you've had a tedious job with us 'posties'! Guess lots of copies of each sheet took some collating. If you go computer only you'll lose me since I've no access to Internet at all! Guess that could apply to the rest of us. I could assist with 'admin' possibly but would be useless at route devising etc as some of my poor efforts must show! I suspect a mixed bag of clue types with easier ones thrown in occasionally would make a good competition ( need an occasional boost to morale! at least, I usually do!) I've enjoyed it anyway and will be present for the Winter ones anyway. Can't do an ode - nothing to work from, sorry! Thanks for your work during the Summer to produce the clues. Sorry about 18-19, I was away! have a good holiday.  Carol Moulton
