Read the Rules of the Game
first to get a general idea of how the game works and moves are made.
Don't be daunted by the length of them, if you are a rally competitor they
will soon make sense. Save the web pages (or equivalent PDF files) of
various topics to your computer for future reference: Rules
of the Game Rally Kit Cards: Drivers
Navigators Equipment
Acceleration Deceleration
Starting Speed and Hazard!
Cards.
Work through the Example Rally. This illustrates just about every aspect of the Internet version of Rally Round. If anything is unclear, send an email and the answer will posted to the Update page for the event. When the Road Book for the event has been published, save the web page and/or the marked map to your computer. Study the published route and using the standard rules of movement only i.e. Starting Speed of 10 mph, and Acceleration and Deceleration rates of 10 mph, and make your best moves to minimise your penalties. Concentrate on the sections where you lost most time and ask yourself the following types of questions: Did I have to keep adjusting my speed to avoid finishing a move on a ford
so that I didn't miss turns (drop minutes) and have to re-start using a new
Starting Speed? Did I have to keep adjusting my speed to avoid finishing a move on a
Hazard! square? Can I get sneaky and pass through a Black Spot or use a Hidden Track? I keep wanting to put my foot down, but these damn bends and bridges
force me to slow down. What can I do? Hey! Some of these white roads are rough. If only I could dash down them,
my Stage and Selective times would be much better. Bloody Give Way junctions. I'm just getting into my rhythm on a nice Road
Section and I have to put the brakes on. Do I have to stop and restart? I'm not keen on all these villages I keep going through. You've
designated them as Quiet Zones so I have to slow down. I've lost a lot of time on a Selective that uses mostly Yellow roads. How
can do better? Of course there is no definitive set of Rally Kit cards that you should choose. You are allowed only one Driver card, Navigator card etc for the whole event, so you'll have to find the best compromise. Cards that give you a small penalty on a Special Stage on Yellow roads, may work against you on a Road Section with a lot of bends. Your ultimate aim is to minimise your penalties for the whole event not for one particular section. Apply some science, common sense or trial and error to the selection of Rally Kit until you think you've done the best you can. Now you need to submit your answers on the Time Card form for the event. Be careful here. Write your moves on paper first and check that you haven't broken any standard rules of movement or overridden the standard rules without the correct use of a Rally Kit or Hazard! card. Enter your moves according to the legend and calculate your penalties. If you've made some mistakes, they'll be highlighted to you and you will have you one opportunity to correct them. If they are still wrong you will receive a maximum penalty for the incorrect section. Enjoy! |
